About the Item
Print of the Colored Etching "Castor" by artist Jean-Baptiste-Claude-Richard de Saint-Non , complete with frame.Archaeologist, draughtsman, engraver (Paris 1727 - there 1791); abbot, was exiled to Poitiers for his opposition to the Unigenitus bull. He traveled to Holland, England (1750), Italy (1756, 1759-61); in 1778 he visited Paestum. Suggested by the sites and archaeological excavations, he wrote Voyage pittoresque, ou description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile (1781-86, published with the collaboration of D. Vivant de Denon). During his stay in Rome he protected some young French artists, including H. Robert, J.-H. Fragonard, who provided him with drawings for his collections of engravings (Fragments de peintures ... d'après les maîtres italiens, 1770-73 and Vues de Suisse, 1777-79). He was also a painter.
