About the Item

Title: Jesus Christ Engraving – John XIV I Am the Way c.1735 Description: This serene antique engraving titled “Our Saviour Jesus Christ” references St. John Chapter XIV, Verse 6, where Jesus proclaims, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving depicts Christ seated outdoors in a posture of gentle authority and divine teaching. Jesus is shown with a radiant halo around his head, wearing flowing robes, his right arm extended outward in blessing or teaching, and his left hand resting calmly. The composition places him against a detailed natural background with trees, rocky terrain, and clouds opening above, conveying the peace and power of his words. His gaze is turned softly to the right, inviting reflection upon his declaration of being the way to the Father. Executed with precision using the copper engraving technique, the print reveals fine linear detailing, delicate hatching for shading, and clear figure rendering. While unsigned, it aligns stylistically with works engraved after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart for English folio Bibles of the early 18th century. Such engravings served as theological illustrations and visual devotionals in Protestant households, reinforcing daily scriptural readings. Collectors value these prints for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into early Protestant theology and devotional practice, and the visual culture of biblical teaching in the home. Condition summary: Fair condition with light age toning and minor foxing, as well as a water stain visible along the top margin and upper left area, not obscuring the main image. Plate impression remains strong, with engraved details clear and well preserved. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black moulding with gold inner edging to enhance its classical religious presence. Use a warm cream or ivory mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones and subtly minimise the visibility of the water stain. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve its fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This print will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of devotional engravings, offering both aesthetic beauty and profound theological reflection.
