Jewish Bride Print Algeria 1853 by Compte-Calix – Hand-Colored Lithograph
This exquisite antique print depicts a Jewish bride (Juive Mariée) from Algeria, created by François Claudius Compte-Calix and published in Paris in 1853 by Chez Aubert et C-ie as part of the luxurious Le Keepsake de Costumes series, a celebrated publication showcasing traditional costumes from Europe, North Africa, and beyond.
François Claudius Compte-Calix (1813-1880) was a distinguished French painter and lithographer known for his romantic and historical scenes as well as his detailed costume studies. His works combine decorative elegance with ethnographic accuracy, offering both artistic beauty and cultural documentation.
This hand-colored lithograph, from the Musée Cosmopolite collection, portrays a Jewish bride standing gracefully in her ceremonial attire. She wears an ornate golden bodice over a white blouse, a bright red sash, and a richly patterned blue skirt adorned with large golden floral motifs. Her headdress is elaborately styled with a long trailing white veil attached to an embroidered headpiece, signifying her bridal status. The lithograph’s fine detailing and delicate hand coloring highlight the textures and patterns of the costume, evoking dignity, tradition, and elegance.
Lithography, the technique used here, involved drawing directly onto a limestone plate before inking and pressing onto paper to achieve crisp lines and tonal subtleties. Each print was then hand-colored using water-based pigments, resulting in vivid and lifelike hues.
Condition summary: overall good condition with scattered foxing visible throughout the sheet, especially in the margins, and a mild water stain along the right margin, not affecting the central image. Light toning is typical of mid-19th century prints.
Framing tips: this print will be beautifully presented in a gold or dark wood frame to complement the rich tones of the costume. A cream or warm beige mat will enhance the hand coloring while providing a soft contrast to the aged paper. Museum-quality UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the colors and prevent further toning.
Ideal for collectors of Jewish cultural history, Algerian ethnographic art, orientalism, or 19th-century costume prints, this lithograph also makes a refined decorative accent for studies, libraries, cultural institutions, or elegant living spaces, offering timeless beauty and a meaningful glimpse into North African Jewish bridal traditions.
