About the Item

The Kaaba in Mecca – Early 18th-Century Dutch Engraving, c. 1730 This rare and striking copper engraving presents a historic European view of the Kaaba ("De Kabba, of Het Huis Gods te Mecca"), the most sacred site in Islam, located at the heart of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. Produced in the Netherlands around 1730, the print reflects European curiosity about the Islamic world during the age of exploration and trade, particularly through the lens of travel accounts and secondhand reports. Rendered in crisp lines and impressive architectural precision, the Kaaba is shown within its enclosed sanctuary, surrounded by minarets, domed arcades, and pilgrims engaged in various acts of devotion. The central cube structure is clearly depicted with its doors, slanted roof, and adjacent features, including the semi-circular Hatim wall. Smaller buildings, domed pavilions, and gate structures occupy the foreground, suggesting the surrounding religious and administrative infrastructure. Despite the stylized European interpretation, the print provides a valuable historical visualization of the sacred enclosure. This engraving likely originates from a Dutch travel compendium or illustrated history, such as those published by Jacob van Meurs or Olfert Dapper, which were among the earliest visual sources for European audiences unfamiliar with Islamic sacred geography. The title translates to "The Kaaba, or the House of God in Mecca," conveying its spiritual significance even to a non-Muslim readership. Condition: Excellent impression with wide margins. Central fold as issued, with minimal creasing. Very minor age-toning and two small spots at the lower margin. Paper is strong and clean, with a clearly defined plate mark. Framing tips: This historically significant print would pair well with a dark wood or black frame and a cream or light sand-colored mat to highlight the warm paper tone and enhance the architectural detail. Consider museum glass to preserve the fine engraving lines. Technique: Copper engraving Maker: Anonymous Dutch engraver, Netherlands, circa 1730
