About the Item

Title: 18th Century Engraving of Thamas Koulikan (Nader Shah), King of Persia Description: This antique engraving depicts Thamas Koulikan, known in European sources as Nader Shah (ruled 1736–1747), one of Persia’s most powerful and ambitious rulers. The portrait shows him in a three-quarter view, wearing a turban adorned with an aigrette and plume, with armour and richly embroidered robes. His gaze is turned upwards, conveying a sense of strength and determination, which is emphasised by the engraved French poem below praising his courage and greatness while also referencing his humility. The inscription reads “Thamas Koulikan Roy de Perse” within the oval frame and features a poem honouring his character and rule, concluding with the publication address “à Paris chez Daumont rue St. Martin”. Daumont was an active French engraver and publisher in Paris between approximately 1740 and 1780, known for his views and ethnographic or historical portraits intended for European audiences curious about distant rulers and lands. This engraving was produced in the mid to late 18th century, shortly after Nader Shah's reign, at a time when European interest in Persian military and courtly splendour was strong. The fine stipple and line engraving technique and delicate shading illustrate the craftsmanship typical of French printmakers of the era. Condition report: Good condition for its age. The sheet has wide margins with minor edge wear, slight toning, and a few small stains near the edges, not affecting the image area. The impression is strong and clear. Tips for framing: This portrait would display beautifully in a thin gilt or ebony frame with a cream or light grey mount to complement the subtle tones and historic nature of the print. For a museum-style presentation, consider a floated mount to show the full original sheet and plate marks.
