This exquisite hand-colored engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of Montesa, a Spanish chivalric order established in 1317. Underneath, he wears richly decorated golden attire, reflecting the grandeur and nobility associated with Montesa’s storied history. His pose, with one hand extended, conveys both authority and grace, while the sword at his side signifies the martial heritage of the order.
The engraving is from the series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden," a monumental work on spiritual and secular orders originally published between 1779 and 1791. Compiled by Christian Friedrich Schwan in Mannheim, this collection is revered for its detailed illustrations and historical insights into the customs and regalia of various chivalric and religious orders.
