Knight of the Order of Montesa, Original Rare Hand-colored Engraving, 1791

About the Item

Knight of the Order of Montesa, hand-colored engraving, 1791 Description: This exquisite hand-colored engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of Montesa, a Spanish chivalric order established in 1317. The knight is adorned in a flowing white mantle emblazoned with the distinctive red cross of the order. Underneath, he wears richly decorated golden attire, reflecting the grandeur and nobility associated with Montesa’s storied history. His pose, with one hand extended, conveys both authority and grace, while the sword at his side signifies the martial heritage of the order. The engraving is from the series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden," a monumental work on spiritual and secular orders originally published between 1779 and 1791. Compiled by Christian Friedrich Schwan in Mannheim, this collection is revered for its detailed illustrations and historical insights into the customs and regalia of various chivalric and religious orders. This rare piece provides a glimpse into the ceremonial clothing and symbolism of one of Spain's most prestigious knightly orders. The vibrant hand-coloring enhances the detail, making it a standout example of 18th-century engraving craftsmanship. Condition Report: The engraving is in very good condition, with minor foxing along the edges and light toning typical of its age. The colors remain vibrant, and the paper is free of tears or significant stains. Some faint creasing on close inspection. Matting and Framing Tip: For optimal display, pair this engraving with a neutral cream or light gray acid-free mat to highlight its subtle tones. A gold or gilt frame with ornate detailing will complement the noble subject, adding a touch of historical elegance to your space.
