Knight of the Order of St. Andrew in Russia: 18th-Century Hand-Colored Engraving

About the Item

Knight of the Order of St. Andrew in Russia: 18th-Century Hand-Colored Engraving This exquisite hand-colored engraving portrays a "Ritter des Heiligen Andreas Ordens in Russland" (Knight of the Order of St. Andrew in Russia), the most prestigious order of the Russian Empire, established in 1698 by Tsar Peter the Great. The knight is shown in full ceremonial regalia, wearing a white cloak with green accents, symbolizing purity and hope. His striking golden waistcoat adds a vibrant touch, while his red stockings provide a bold contrast. The ensemble is completed with a traditional black hat adorned with a feather and a blue St. Andrew's Cross. Below the figure, the Order's insignia is beautifully illustrated, featuring two crowned eagles holding a blue cross with St. Andrew crucified. Surrounding the emblem are intricate floral motifs and additional heraldic symbols, underscoring the grandeur of this historic order. This engraving is part of the celebrated series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben," published between 1779 and 1791 in Mannheim by Christian Friedrich Schwan. This series serves as a visual documentation of chivalric traditions, showcasing the ceremonial attire of knights from various orders across Europe. Condition: Very good condition with rich, vibrant colors and finely preserved details. Minimal age-related toning and light edge wear, typical for its age, do not detract from its overall beauty. Frame Tip: A classic dark wood or gold-leaf frame with a green mat will enhance the engraving's historical charm while emphasizing the vivid colors. This framing choice will create an elegant and timeless display. A rare and historically significant addition to any collection of European orders or Russian Imperial memorabilia, this engraving is a captivating representation of 18th-century ceremonial splendor.
