Knight of the Order of St. George in Bavaria: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving

About the Item

Knight of the Order of St. George in Bavaria: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving This finely detailed hand-colored engraving, titled "Ritter des Ordens St. Georgen in Bayern in der Kriegskleidung" (Knight of the Order of St. George in Bavaria in Military Attire), depicts a ceremonial knight clad in striking armor, symbolizing the chivalric traditions of the Order. The knight is presented holding a sword in one hand and a shield adorned with the emblem of the Order—a golden star on a blue field. A plumed helmet with pink feathers completes the attire, adding a touch of grandeur to this historic depiction. The Order of St. George in Bavaria, established in 1729, was a Catholic chivalric order committed to the ideals of honor, faith, and service. This engraving is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan’s renowned series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden" (Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders), published between 1779 and 1791. Schwan’s work is celebrated for its accuracy in documenting the unique attire and insignia of Europe’s noble and religious orders. This engraving is a valuable artifact for collectors and enthusiasts of European heraldry, military history, or chivalric orders. The intricate detailing and vibrant colors enhance the historical significance of the piece, making it an ideal addition to any collection. Condition Report Well-preserved for its age, with light foxing and minor discoloration along the edges. The hand-coloring remains vivid, and the overall presentation is sharp. A few faint handling marks are visible but do not detract from the visual impact. Framing Tip This engraving will benefit from a dark blue or gold-accented mat to highlight the regal tones of the knight’s attire. A gilded or black wooden frame would complement the artwork, creating an elegant display. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the vivid hand-coloring for years to come.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
