Knight of the White Eagle Order in Poland: Regal Hand-Colored Engraving, 1791

About the Item

Knight of the White Eagle Order in Poland: Regal 18th-Century Hand-Colored Engraving This exquisite hand-colored engraving depicts a "Ritter des weißen Adlerordens in Polen" (Knight of the White Eagle Order in Poland). The noble figure stands confidently in resplendent ceremonial attire, adorned with intricate gold embroidery, a royal blue sash, and the insignia of the Order of the White Eagle prominently displayed. He is draped in a luxurious ermine-lined crimson cape, signifying high status and regality. At his feet lies a richly detailed chain featuring swans and medallions, symbolic of the order’s virtues. This engraving is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan's celebrated series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben," published between 1779 and 1791 in Mannheim. This work meticulously documents European chivalric orders, showcasing their ceremonial attire and significance. The White Eagle Order, established in 1705 by King Augustus II the Strong of Poland, is one of the most prestigious Polish honors, awarded to individuals of great merit and loyalty. Condition: The engraving is in fine condition with vibrant, well-preserved colors and sharp detailing. Minimal age-related toning and slight wear along the edges are visible but do not detract from its overall beauty. Frame Tip: A regal gold frame paired with a white or light gray mat will complement the engraving's vibrant colors and emphasize its luxurious details. This combination will enhance its presence in a classic or modern interior. This rare piece of 18th-century art offers a glimpse into Polish chivalric history and European noble traditions. Ideal for collectors of historical prints, Polish heritage, or chivalric orders, it embodies the elegance and grandeur of its time, making it an invaluable addition to any collection.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
