Laurens Reael – Dutch VOC Governor and Admiral, Hand-Colored Lithograph, ca.1850

About the Item

Laurens Reael – Dutch VOC Governor and Admiral, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph Item Description: This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Laurens Reael, a distinguished figure in the early history of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Born in Amsterdam in 1583, Reael served as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1616 to 1619 and later became an admiral in the Dutch navy. A humanist and scholar as well as a statesman, Reael was known for his moderate stance and legal-minded approach to colonial administration, which often brought him into conflict with more aggressive VOC policies. In this scene, Reael is seated at a table, holding a document, with another official at his side. A map is partially visible on the wall behind them, suggesting a moment of planning or correspondence related to naval or colonial matters. His elaborate lace collar and thoughtful expression reflect his cultured personality and leadership role. The lithograph was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. The image is rendered with fine detail and soft, hand-applied coloring, capturing a moment of calm reflection in the life of a statesman. Located in Langweer, NL
Jan Evertsen – Dutch Admiral in Battle Dress, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Jan Evertsen, a prominent admiral in the Dutch navy during the seventeenth century. Born in 1600 in Vlissingen, Evertsen was part of a well-known naval family and fought with distinction during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. He rose through the ranks to become lieutenant admiral of Zeeland. He was killed in action during the St James’s Day Battle in 1666, remembered as a brave and loyal defender of the Dutch Republic. The print shows Evertsen on the deck of a warship, fully clad in richly detailed armor. He holds a command baton and rests one hand confidently on his sword. A large cannon looms behind him, along with nautical equipment and the curve of the ship’s structure, grounding the portrait in a powerful naval context. His determined expression and posture reflect his leadership and courage at sea. Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht, the lithograph features strong lines, hand-applied color, and an elegant composition that highlights the valor and historical significance of this Dutch naval hero.
