Jan Evertsen – Dutch Admiral in Battle Dress, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Jan Evertsen, a prominent admiral in the Dutch navy during the seventeenth century. Born in 1600 in Vlissingen, Evertsen was part of a well-known naval family and fought with distinction during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. He rose through the ranks to become lieutenant admiral of Zeeland. He was killed in action during the St James’s Day Battle in 1666, remembered as a brave and loyal defender of the Dutch Republic. The print shows Evertsen on the deck of a warship, fully clad in richly detailed armor. He holds a command baton and rests one hand confidently on his sword. A large cannon looms behind him, along with nautical equipment and the curve of the ship’s structure, grounding the portrait in a powerful naval context. His determined expression and posture reflect his leadership and courage at sea.
