Auguste Anastasi Paris 1820-1889 attended the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1849, participated in several competitions winning numerous awards. He painted and made lithographs in Paris, Holland in Rome and especially in Naples. He collaborated as a lithographer on the magazines L'artiste and Les Artistes contemporaines; from 1860 he was afflicted by blindness and stopped painting soon after. I his colleagues organized a lottery by converting the profits into an annuity, after his death the Academy of Fine Arts allocated that annuity to an emerging artist in need. Lithography is a printing process that has been popular since the 19th century, invented in Munich in 1798 by Aloys Senefelder (1771-1834). This process takes advantage of the characteristics of greasy inks of not adhering to wet surfaces, and for this purpose a porous limestone from Solnhofen in Germany was used, which was cut into slabs and smoothed, and on which was directly drawn with fat-based lithographic pencils and chalks. At this point it is wet with water and can be inked with a roller. The barely visible pattern, being made of fatty matter, repels water and allows the ink to set which does not happen where the surface remains wet. A sheet is pressed and the printing is done. By smoothing the stone it can be reused many times. The speed of production, inexpensiveness, and the ability to print both text and illustration with a single matrix sanctioned until the advent of photographic techniques the success of lithography, which became a formidable means of mass dissemination. Amalfi is located in Italy in the province of Salerno on the southwestern coast of Italy and is considered the pearl of the Amalfi Coast, after which the coast itself is named. Amalfi is a small town nestled in an enchanting natural environment, characterized by mountainous terrain with steep cliffs. Between the 9th and 11th centuries AD. C. was the seat of a powerful Maritime Republic.
