About the Artist:
Henri Rivière (1864–1951) was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then moved to intaglio printmaking, specifically etching, in 1882. In 1886, he also began working as a stage designer and director of shadow theatre at the cabaret Le Chat Noir, where he introduced innovative colored backdrops.
He later devoted himself fully to painting and printmaking and became a prominent figure in the history of etching, printmaking, woodcut, lithography, and watercolor. He created approximately one thousand watercolors during his lifetime.
