Madonna and Child Print after Raphael – La Vierge à la Chaise, 19th Century
This exquisite 19th-century lithograph, titled La Vierge à la Chaise (The Virgin of the Chair), is a finely rendered reproduction after the celebrated Renaissance painting by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483–1520). The original painting, completed around 1513–1514, is housed in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence and is among Raphael’s most beloved depictions of the Madonna and Child.
This lithograph captures the grace, intimacy, and refined composition of Raphael's original, presenting the seated Virgin Mary lovingly embracing the infant Jesus while the young Saint John the Baptist looks on devoutly. The detail and emotional depth conveyed through the lithographic technique reflect the high quality of printmaking typical of the 19th century, especially in France and England, where Raphael’s works were revered and widely reproduced for an eager art-loving public.
The print was drawn by Lemoine and lithographed by Azeul. It was published in Paris by E. Savary & Cie, Rue du Louvre 10, and also distributed in London by E. Gambart, 25 Berners Street, Oxford Street. It is part of a larger series of masterwork reproductions and is numbered 47.
Lithography, the technique used here, allowed for a delicate gradation of tone and fine detail, ideally suited for capturing the subtleties of Renaissance composition and form.
