About the Item

Medina Man Costume Print – Antique Hand-Colored Lithograph, 1854 This antique hand-colored lithograph, published in 1854 in Album des Voyages Anciens et Modernes by Martial Ardant Frères, depicts a man from Medina, one of the most important cities of the Islamic world. The figure is shown in traditional attire, carrying a firearm and accessories, reflecting both his cultural identity and the martial associations of the region. The man is dressed in a flowing beige cloak that drapes around his body in layered folds, giving him a dignified and imposing appearance. On his head he wears a red cap partially covered by a light hood, leaving his beard and solemn expression visible. He holds a musket in one hand, while a powder horn hangs at his side, suspended by a red strap. His shoes are bright red, adding a striking contrast to the otherwise subdued tones of the garment. A long spear rests on his shoulder, completing his image as both a traveler and a defender. Medina, located in present-day Saudi Arabia, is one of the holiest cities in Islam, second only to Mecca. In the 19th century, European readers of illustrated albums were fascinated by depictions of Arabia, a land often shrouded in mystery but central to both trade and religion. Costume prints such as this combined exoticism with an attempt at ethnographic observation, offering a stylized but evocative glimpse of life in distant regions. For collectors today, this lithograph offers both decorative appeal and cultural significance. It illustrates not only the attire but also the way Medina and its people were perceived by European publishers in the mid-19th century. The balance of soft beige tones and bright details, such as the red shoes and cap, gives the figure an understated elegance while preserving the sense of authenticity in his representation. Condition report: Light foxing in the margins, with mild age toning consistent with mid-19th-century paper. Image remains clean and vibrant. Plate mark visible. Wide margins intact. Framing tips: A dark wood or walnut frame with a cream mat will highlight the neutral tones of the cloak. A gilt frame with a pale red or terracotta mat can bring out the warm details of the shoes and headwear, emphasizing the exotic character of the print. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: Martial Ardant Frères, Paris & Limoges, 1854

Traditional Eleuth Warrior Attire in 1844 Hand-Colored Lithograph
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: "Traditional Eleuth Warrior Attire in 1844 Lithograph" Description: This hand-colored lithograph titled *Eleuthe* (Eleuth) portrays a man from the Eleuth tribe, a subgroup of the Oirat Mongols. The image is part of Auguste Wahlen's "Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde" (Customs, Manners, and Dress of All the Peoples of the World), published in 1844. The print was created by an anonymous engraver after Wahlen's designs, with notable contributions from artists such as Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert, and R. King. The lithograph is enhanced with Arabic gum on vellum paper, adding a bright gloss and deepening the colors. Notable Features of the Attire: - Helmet: The warrior wears a distinctive helmet, possibly crafted from metal or leather, which suggests a readiness for battle. The helmet design is typical of Mongolian and Central Asian tribes, providing protection while maintaining mobility. - Coat: The long, fur-lined coat is characteristic of the Eleuths, suited to the cold climates of Central Asia. The coat is intricately patterned, showcasing both practicality and status. - Sword: The sword hanging by his side is a symbol of his warrior class. The hilt appears to be ornately decorated, hinting at a higher social rank or experience in battle. Cultural and Historical Insight: The Eleuth people were part of the broader Oirat confederation of nomadic Mongols who lived in what is now Xinjiang and parts of Central Asia. Their warrior culture was highly developed, and this lithograph captures the essence of a soldier's dress during the 19th century. The attire shown here reflects both the harsh environment and the martial lifestyle that characterized their existence. Keywords for Searching: People searching for prints like this might use terms such as "Eleuth warrior lithograph," "Wahlen 1844 Mongolian print...
