About the Item

Antique Portrait Print – James Northcote R.A. by F.C. Lewis after G.H. Harlow – 1824 This distinguished antique engraving presents a portrait of James Northcote, Esq. R.A. (1746–1831), one of Britain’s notable painters and a prolific contributor to the Royal Academy. Northcote was a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds and gained recognition for his historical paintings, portraits, and literary works. He was also the author of an important biography of Reynolds and a series of publications on art and artists. In this portrait, Northcote is seated in a thoughtful yet commanding pose, holding a pair of spectacles in his right hand, a symbol of both scholarship and reflection. His expression is lively, suggesting the wit and intelligence for which he was known. The background includes a canvas depicting a dramatic figure, a nod to his career as a painter of historical subjects. The engraving was executed by Frederick Christian Lewis (1779–1856), one of the leading English stipple and line engravers of the period, particularly admired for his portrait and reproductive work. It is based on a painting by George Henry Harlow (1787–1819), a talented artist remembered for his portraiture and theatrical compositions. The plate is finely inscribed: “Engraved by F.C. Lewis, from the original Picture. Painted by G.H. Harlow.” It was published in London on June 1, 1824 by Messrs. Hurst & Robinson, Cheapside & Pall Mall, with a dedication to Sir J.E. Swinburne, Bart., F.R.S., F.A.S. This print combines the skill of two important artists—Harlow’s painterly vision and Lewis’s precise engraving—resulting in a work of considerable artistic and historical value. Portrait engravings of artists by fellow artists were an established tradition in the early nineteenth century, intended to celebrate and preserve the legacy of the cultural figures of the age. Condition summary: Good impression with fine detail and clean plate mark. Paper fair and shows minor toning and creases consistent with age, but no tears or repairs. Brown spot above the image. Framing tips: A period-appropriate gilt or dark wood frame with an ivory or pale cream mount will enhance the formal quality of the portrait. For a more scholarly appearance, a black or ebonized frame works well, drawing attention to the engraving’s crisp detail. Technique: Stipple and line engraving Maker: Engraved by F.C. Lewis after G.H. Harlow, published London 1824
