1845 Hand-Colored Engraving of Wildebeest – Blue & Black Gnu

About the Item

Title: 1845 Hand-Colored Engraving of Wildebeest – Blue & Black Gnu by William Jardine Description:This exquisite 1845 hand-colored engraving features detailed illustrations of two wildebeest species: the Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and the Black Wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou). The engraving showcases the distinctive characteristics of each species. The Blue Wildebeest is depicted with its robust frame, slate-gray coat, and signature dark vertical stripes, highlighting its adaptation to the African savannas. In contrast, the Black Wildebeest is illustrated with its unique forward-curving horns, dark mane, and reddish-brown coloration, reflecting its presence in the grasslands of South Africa. The meticulous hand-coloring brings vibrancy to the illustration, enhancing the lifelike representation of these animals. This particular engraving exemplifies the blend of artistry and scientific observation characteristic of the period, making it a valuable piece for collectors of antique zoological prints and enthusiasts of African wildlife. Condition: The print is well-preserved, displaying vivid hand-coloring with some age-related toning but colors still vived. Slight edge wear consistent with its age. Matting & Framing Tips: To accentuate the engraving's historical charm, consider using a cream or light beige mat paired with a classic dark wooden frame. Utilizing UV-protective glass will help preserve the vibrant hand-coloring and prevent potential fading over time. Published circa 1845.

Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'MARION DE LORME' Original antique print of Marion Delorme. Marion Delorme (3 October 1613 – 2 July 1650) was a French courtesan known for her relationships with the important men of her time. She was the daughter of Jean de Lou, sieur de l'Orme, president of the treasurers of France in Champagne, and of Marie Chastelain. She was born in a wealthy family at her father's château near Champaubert. Initiated into the philosophy of physical pleasures by the epicurean and atheist Jacques Vallée, Sieur Des Barreaux, she soon left him for Cinq Mars, at that time at the height of his popularity, and succeeded, it is said, in marrying him in secret. She began hosting a salon, and was introduced into the life of being a courtesan. From this time Marion Delorme's salon became one of the most brilliant centres of elegant Parisian society. After the execution of Cinq Mars she is said to have numbered among her lovers and benefactors Charles de Saint-Évremond (1610-1703) the wit and litterateur, George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham...
