Original Colored Engraving of the Norway Lemming, 1775

About the Item

Original antique hand-colored engraving of the Norway Lemming, originating from "Die Säugethiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen," which translates to "The Mammals in Illustrations According to Nature with Descriptions." This work, published by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber, spanned from 1774 to 1855 and is a significant collection of natural history illustrations and descriptions of mammals. The colored engraving of the Norway Lemming is by the German School, dating back to the 19th century. The illustrator of the piece is Nitschmann and the engraver is Johann Nusbiegel. This particular illustration comes from a publication which was published over a lengthy period from 1774 to 1855 by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber was a naturalist and a professor who contributed significantly to the field of natural history during his time. The publication is known for its detailed illustrations and comprehensive descriptions of mammals, and it was a significant work in terms of scientific illustration and taxonomy. The terms mentioned such as Berglemming and Fjellemming are likely common names in different languages for the lemming, and "Naturgeschichte" translates to natural history, suggesting the scientific nature of the publication. "Illustration, Tiere, Säugetiere, Nagetiere" refers to illustration, animals, mammals, and rodents respectively, classifying the subject of the engraving in the broader categories of life it belongs to. The Latin names "Mus lemmus" and "Lemmus lemmus" refer to the scientific classification of the species.

  • Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
    Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
