Original Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving of The Blue-Headed Parrot, 1794

About the Item

"Vivid Elegance: The Blue-Headed Parrot" Description: This hand-colored copperplate engraving from the late 18th century showcases the vibrant beauty of the Blue-Headed Parrot. Crafted by the talented William Hayes and Matilda Hayes, this illustration is part of the first systematic record of a private collection of live birds from Osterly Park. Published in the seminal work "Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds" in 1794 by Bulmer of London, and later in a second edition in 1817 for the benefit of Hayes' family, this artwork stands as a fine example of ornithological illustration. The parrot is depicted with a richly detailed blue head that transitions smoothly into a green body, with striking red patches on the wings. The bird is perched upon a gnarled branch, gazing alertly out from the page, embodying a blend of curiosity and dignity. The backdrop features a serene landscape with muted colors that highlight the bird's vivid plumage. This piece, touched by the delicate hands of the Hayes family, is not only a visual treat but also a historical document, offering insight into the avian diversity of the era's menageries. The aged paper, with its natural patina, adds character to the print, suggesting stories from its past and evoking a sense of timelessness.
