Patina Rich Engraving of an Antique Hand-Colored Great Crowned Pigeon, 1794

About the Item

"Regal Display: The Great Crowned Pigeon" Description: This hand-colored copperplate engraving from the late 18th century is a splendid example from the oeuvre of William Hayes and Matilda Hayes, featured in the collection "Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds" from Osterly Park. Published originally in 1794 by Bulmer of London, this illustration was part of the first comprehensive documentation of a private collection of birds, and later included in the second edition in 1817 to support Hayes' family. The Great Crowned Pigeon is portrayed with a majestic crown of feathery plumes, which gives the bird an air of nobility and distinction. Its plumage is a tapestry of slate blue adorned with intricate patterns of maroon and white, showcasing the Hayes' meticulous attention to the bird's natural coloration and texture. The pigeon stands calmly on a small mound, set against a simple yet elegant background that subtly suggests its natural habitat without detracting from the bird's own striking appearance. The gentle aging of the paper provides a historical context, evoking the rich tradition of natural history studies during the period. This work not only represents the pinnacle of artistic craftsmanship of the era but also serves as a historical record of avian biodiversity in private collections.
