About the Item

Pair of John Gould hand colored framed lithographs family of toucans. "Pteroglossus Inscriptus" and " Pteroglossus Hypoglaurus" Each signed in plate. Printed by Charles Hullmandell. Mid 19th century. John Gould September 1804 – February 1881 was an English ornithologist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates produced by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Gould's work is referenced in Charles Darwin's book, On the Origin of Species. The pair were printed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel. Charles was born in London, where he maintained a lithographic establishment on Great Marlborough Street from about 1819 until his death in 1850. He was born in Queen Street, Mayfair.
