About the Item

Pair of Lithographs of Fox Hunting Scene Engravings by J. Harris This is a pair of hand-colored aquatints titled "The Right and Wrong Sort, or a Good and Bad Style of Going Across Country." Engraved by J. Harris after Henry Alken, these lively prints depict contrasting fox hunting scenes, one showcasing skillful horsemanship, the other a comical tumble. Published by Messrs Fores in the 1840s, they capture the dynamism and humor characteristic of British sporting art. Henry Alken (1785-1851) was a renowned British painter and engraver specializing in sporting and coaching scenes. His work is celebrated for its accurate portrayal of horses, lively action, and often humorous depictions of mishaps. J. Harris, the engraver, skillfully translated Alken's original artwork into the aquatint medium, capturing the detail and vibrancy of the scenes. The prints appear to be in good condition overall for their age, with vibrant colors and clear lines. Some foxing on the paper edges is evident. The frames show some minor wear consistent with age, adding to their antique charm. Two frames: 25 5/8” wide x 22 1/8” high x 1/2” thick
