About the Item

Pangolin, Panther & Insects – Original Antique Zoological Print, circa 1849 Dict. Univ. d’Hist. Nat., Plate 431 Description: A captivating original hand-colored zoological engraving from the mid-19th century, published in the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle (circa 1849). This rare plate presents a richly detailed naturalistic study of diverse fauna including a pangolin, panther, and various insects—each numbered and labeled with their corresponding French names: Pangolin, Pangonie, Panoupe, and Panthère. The animals are depicted in carefully shaded tones, with selective coloring emphasizing the texture of scales, fur, and wings. The backdrop features subtle botanical elements and landscape illustrations typical of early encyclopedic natural history works. Drawn by H. Giraud and engraved with exceptional finesse, this piece is both scientifically significant and visually dramatic—ideal for collectors of natural history or interior spaces that embrace vintage academic charm. Condition: Good antique condition. Slight age-related toning and mild foxing along the margins. Plate mark visible. Unframed Provenance: From the Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle, published under the direction of Charles Dessalines d’Orbigny, Paris, 1840s.
