Paradise Lily (Anthericum liliastrum), Hand-Coloured Botanical Print, 1874

About the Item

Paradise Lily (Anthericum liliastrum), hand-coloured botanical print, 1874 This refined 19th-century hand-coloured lithograph features Anthericum liliastrum, commonly known as the Paradise Lily or St Bernard’s Lily. The illustration was published in 1874 as part of the second series of Alpine Plants by George Bell & Sons, London. With its graceful composition and vivid colouring, this antique print beautifully captures the botanical charm of alpine flora. Native to southern Europe, particularly the Pyrenees and Alps, the Paradise Lily is a hardy perennial known for its elegant, star-shaped white flowers with prominent orange stamens. Traditionally, it has symbolized purity and was often cultivated in monastic gardens. The tall stems and slender, grass-like leaves make it both striking and graceful, and these characteristics are faithfully rendered in this detailed lithograph. Printed using high-quality lithographic techniques and then individually hand-coloured, each plate in this series has its own unique variations, enhancing its value and appeal. The colouring is fresh and accurate, with subtle gradations in the white petals and vibrant green foliage standing out against a soft, sky-like background. The paper has aged beautifully, with only minor toning, and its creamy texture adds to the antique charm. This print is ideal for display in a home or office, particularly where a botanical, classical, or serene aesthetic is desired. Whether you're a collector of antique prints or simply appreciate the timeless beauty of floral art, this piece offers both decorative and historical value. Excellent condition with crisp detail and strong original colour. Light signs of age at the lower edge. Best framed with a pale ivory or light grey mat and a silver or dark wood frame to enhance the botanical elegance.
