Born in 1625, Potter is best known for his masterpiece The Young Bull, and he is considered one of the finest animal painters of the Dutch Golden Age. The scene shows Potter in his studio, seated with his palette and brushes in hand, intently working on a large canvas filled with detailed animal studies. Cows, dogs, and a seated shepherd emerge on the canvas, capturing the essence of his naturalistic style. Born in 1584 as the son of William the Silent, Frederik Hendrik served as stadtholder from 1625 to 1647, leading the army through key victories in the Eighty Years' War against Spain and helping secure the independence of the Netherlands. He is depicted here in full ceremonial armor, standing with poise and authority. He holds a commander's baton in one hand, with his sword sheathed at his side. A plumed helmet rests on a draped table beside him, emphasizing his military role and noble status.
