19th-Century Chromolithograph of Bethlehem – Biblical Landscape of 1862
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: 19th-Century Chromolithograph of Bethlehem – Biblical Landscape After David Roberts Description: This remarkable 19th-century chromolithograph presents a sweeping and historically significant view of Bethlehem, one of the most revered locations in Christian history. The print originates from the 1862 publication *De Middelaar God en der Menschen - Tafereelen uit Jezus' Leven en Werk op Aarde* by J.J.L. Ten Kate, published by Gebroeders Kraay in Amsterdam. The composition is based on an original plate by the renowned British artist David Roberts (1796–1864), whose breathtaking illustrations of biblical sites remain highly sought after by collectors. The scene captures the rugged and rolling hills leading to Bethlehem, with its ancient buildings and religious structures nestled among the rocky terrain. The foreground features a winding path where travelers on foot and horseback make their way toward the city, while the distant mountains add depth and grandeur to the composition. Notably, the Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest and most significant Christian sites, can be seen among the buildings, emphasizing the town's deep historical and spiritual significance. The chromolithographic technique used in this print allows for subtle color variations and fine detailing, bringing the landscape to life with a soft, naturalistic palette. This piece is particularly appealing to collectors of biblical art, historical views of the Holy Land, and 19th-century travel prints...

Carme Déchaussé - 1862 Hand-Colored Lithograph of a Discalced Carmelite Monk
Located in Langweer, NL
Carme Déchaussé - 1862 Hand-Colored Lithograph of a Discalced Carmelite Monk This stunning 1862 hand-colored lithograph portrays a Carme Déchaussé, or Discalced Carmelite monk, an emblem of humility and devotion. The figure is depicted in the characteristic simple brown habit and white mantle, with sandals on his feet—true to the order's name, which means "without shoes." The lithograph is part of the Album ou Collection Complète et Historique des Costumes de la Cour de Rome, a richly illustrated publication that details the diverse attire of Catholic orders and clergy. The Discalced Carmelites, a reform of the Carmelite Order established by Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross in the 16th century, emphasize poverty, prayer, and community. Their attire reflects these values, remaining largely unchanged through centuries and still in use today by members of the order worldwide. This print captures the austerity and spiritual focus of their mission. Created by G. Perugini and accompanied by explanatory texts from Père Hélyot, this lithograph is a unique artistic and historical record. It offers insight into the traditions of one of the Catholic Church's most contemplative orders, making it an excellent piece for collectors interested in religious art, ecclesiastical history, or the evolution of monastic life. Translation of Introduction Text: A powerful interest is attached to the name of Rome, an even more profound interest to the name of Christ. Rome, through its genius, the vast intelligence of its warriors, orators, and legislators, prepared the cradle where Catholicism would be born, grow, develop, and establish itself. The history of Catholicism is the history of this great and glorious city above all others. Virgil, in a truly prophetic verse, said: "Tu regere imperio populos, Romane, memento." This prophecy has seen the most noble, illustrious, and glorious developments, all conspiring for the eternal city's glory: its history, arts, monuments, and the religion at its core. Yet no other city offers such a collection, from the monuments of Augustus to those of Sixtus V and Leo XII, from pagan temples to saints' tombs and martyrs' shrines. This union of grandeur is further illustrated daily by the magnificence of Catholic rites. With this album, we present the splendid costumes of the Papal dignitaries and the humble attire of religious orders. These costumes were inspired by the traditions handed down through centuries and were designed with unique precision by the talented artist G. Perugini. List of Other Engravings in the Book (English Translation): 1. The Pope in Full Ceremony 2. Sovereign Pontiff Celebrating Mass 3. His Holiness Receiving Visitors 4. Cardinal of the Order of Bishops 5. Cardinal Priest 6. Cardinal Deacon 7. Cardinal in Choir Dress 8. Cardinal in Mozzetta 9. Cardinal in City Habit 10. Bishop in Pontifical Attire 11. Greek Catholic Bishop 12. Syrian Bishop 13. Armenian Bishop 14. Keeper of the Relics 15. Prelate in Minor Robes 16. Prelate in Grand Mantle 17. Canon Regular 18. Canon Ordinary 19. Secret Chamberlain 20. Master of Ceremonies 21. Discalced Carmelite Monk (this item is Plate 55) ... (Full list includes 80 titles; available upon request) This print, with its artistic mastery and historical depth, is a perfect addition to any collection focusing on Catholic history, monastic life, or antique religious art.

Carmélite - 1862 Hand-Colored Lithograph of a Carmelite Nun This 1862 hand-colored lithograph portrays a Carmélite, or Carmelite nun, embodying simplicity and devotion. The nun is dressed in the traditional brown habit with a white mantle and wimple, reflecting the Carmelite Order's values of poverty, humility, and prayer. Her calm and contemplative expression symbolizes a life dedicated to spiritual reflection and service. The Carmelite Order, originating in the 12th century on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, emphasizes a contemplative lifestyle centered on prayer, silence, and community. Reformed by Saint Teresa of Ávila in the 16th century, the Discalced Carmelites maintain strict adherence to these principles. Today, Carmelite nuns continue their spiritual mission worldwide, focusing on prayer and devotion in cloistered convents. Antique Hand-Colored Fern Prints - Aspidium Acrostichoides, Cristatum, Rigidum
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique Hand-Colored Fern Prints - Aspidium Acrostichoides, Cristatum, and Rigidum - 19th Century Botanical Art This beautiful set of three antique hand-colored fern prints showcases the intricate detailing of three distinct species from the *Aspidium* genus. These prints are part of *Ferns: British and Exotic*, a classic 19th-century botanical publication known for its exceptional accuracy and artistic appeal. The species depicted in this set include: - **Aspidium acrostichoides** (Christmas Fern): This species is characterized by its dense, evergreen fronds, depicted with great attention to texture and spore-bearing sori. This fern is one of the most well-known in Victorian botanical studies. - **Aspidium cristatum** (Crested Shield Fern): With its delicate fronds and clusters of round sori, the Crested Shield Fern is expertly illustrated to show its botanical structure and intricate design. - **Aspidium rigidum** (Rigid Fern): This print highlights the structure of the fern’s stiff fronds, showing the distinctive brownish spore clusters that set this species apart. It captures the fern’s upright posture, making it a fine addition to any botanical collection. These prints were originally published in *E.J. Lowe’s* celebrated *Ferns: British and Exotic*, which was produced between 1856 and 1860. Lowe, a renowned Victorian botanist, provided both scientific insight and aesthetic beauty through these illustrations, created using the chromolithographic printing technique. This method allowed for vibrant, multi-layered colors, giving these ferns life-like qualities that still resonate today. Each print measures approximately 12 x 8 inches, making them ideal for framing and display in any space that appreciates botanical history. They are not only perfect for collectors of botanical art but also for those looking to bring nature-inspired decor into their home. Condition Report: All prints are in good condition, with some minor foxing and age related toning, mostly on the edges. The colors are vivid, and the details remain crisp despite the prints’ age.
