About the Item
Persian Floral Ornament Print – Antique Lithograph of Birds, Cherubs & Vines, c.1869
This delicately composed chromolithograph features a lush and romantic array of Persian floral ornamentation, inspired by textiles and manuscript illumination from Safavid and Qajar Persia. Plate XX from L'Ornement Polychrome, it beautifully captures the elegance and intricate detail of Persian decorative art as interpreted by 19th-century European designers.
The main panel on the right displays a continuous pattern of flowering vines, pomegranates, tulips, and blossoms in shades of rose, red, and blue, interwoven with birds, mythical creatures, and nude cherubs. These angelic figures, more Western in appearance, reflect the artistic license taken by European illustrators adapting Eastern motifs for a Western decorative arts audience. Still, the stylized foliage and gentle asymmetry of the design remain true to Persian aesthetics.
The left portion of the plate presents several vertical and rectangular fragments of floral and avian motifs. Stylized peacocks, parrots, and abstract floral rosettes are carefully balanced with scrolling foliage and interwoven arabesques. These patterns are reminiscent of 17th- and 18th-century Persian silk brocades, printed cottons, and illuminated borders from Qur’anic manuscripts and court poetry.
Lithographed by Durin and printed in Paris by Firmin-Didot around 1869, this plate showcases the finesse achievable through chromolithography—a method that allowed artists to replicate the layering and subtlety of hand-painted ornament in full color. Albert Racinet’s comprehensive design compilation, of which this print is part, became a foundational source for the decorative revival movements of the late 19th century.
This print offers collectors and designers alike an exquisite glimpse into Persian design principles—delicacy, flow, balance, and symbolic harmony. It served as both an artistic reference and a bridge between Eastern and Western visual cultures.
