Pointillé Engraving, Entitled Marche Incroyable, Boilly Et Bonnefoy, 18th C

About the Item

Very nice engraving entitled "Marche Incroyable" which represents an amusing parade, gathering different characters in Directoire period costumes. Period: 18th century Edition : 1798 Dimensions: H :74 x W :66cm Description: Technique of the image: engraving. - burin. - stipple engraving In the middle: "Registered at the Bibliothèque Nationale, as the property of the publishers. Engraver: Jacques Bonnefoy  Painter of the model : Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845), French painter, draughtsman, lithographer. This print, which brings together several caricatures given successively to the public, is of a very original and striking effect. Among the groups of which this march is formed, one notices the scene of a money merchant, whose features and attitude are of a striking truth. Some marvellous, some unbelievable, some dupes, and above all a supporter of the famous revolutionary committees giving his arm to one of those famous knitters, worthy priestesses of the cult of Robespierre.  Behind the march, we see one of the elegant men of the day knocked down in his cabriolet by the impetuous movement of his frightened horse. No doubt at the sight of the characteristic physiognomies of this truly "incredible" march. "   In a note loaded without modification from the Inventaire du fonds français, graveurs du XVIIIe siècle, it is noted that many of these figures were painted or drawn by Louis-Léopold Boilly separately.  One example is a drawing entitled "Le Cabriolet renversé". A very beautiful observation, so disturbingly real, of the turbulent times of the French Revolution.
