About the Item

Portrait of Giacomo Meyerbeer by Le Gout-Gérard – 19th Century Lithograph, circa 1855 This refined lithograph portrays the renowned 19th-century German composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864), a central figure in French grand opera. Executed with exceptional precision and poise, the portrait presents Meyerbeer seated in a thoughtful pose, resting one hand on his chin while his other arm folds across his chest. His expression is contemplative, a fitting depiction of a man deeply engaged in the intellectual and artistic life of his time. The lithograph was drawn by Le Gout-Gérard and published by Goupil, Vibert & Cie in Paris. It was also distributed in London by Ernest Gambart & Co., 25 Berners Street, and in New York by Goupil, Vibert & Co., reflecting Meyerbeer’s wide renown across Europe and America. The print is numbered 56 in the lower center and likely dates from around 1855, when Meyerbeer was at the height of his fame. Giacomo Meyerbeer was one of the most celebrated composers of his era, best known for operatic masterpieces such as Les Huguenots, Robert le Diable, and L’Africaine. His influence on later composers, including Wagner and Verdi, was significant, and he was a dominant force in shaping the style and scale of 19th-century opera. This portrait is part of a prestigious series by Goupil capturing great artists and cultural figures of the time. Lithography was the preferred printmaking method for portraits during the mid-1800s, offering detailed line work and subtle shading. This print demonstrates the technique’s strengths, particularly in the rendering of Meyerbeer’s facial features, hair, and the folds of his clothing. The composition is intimate yet dignified, showing Meyerbeer as a man of culture and intellect. Condition report: The print is in very good condition. The image area is crisp and clean, with delicate tonal contrast. The wide margins show only minimal age-related foxing and a few light handling marks near the lower edge. The paper is untrimmed and well-preserved overall. Framing suggestions: This elegant portrait would suit a simple black or dark wood frame, possibly with a silver or gold inner edge for contrast. A cream or light grey mat will complement the tones of the lithograph and focus attention on the sitter’s face. UV-protective glass is recommended to protect the fine lines and subtle shading. This piece is ideal for collectors of composer portraits, musical history, and 19th-century printmaking.
