About the Item

Antique Print of the Ribbonfish (Trachypterus) – Gaimard, 1842 This remarkable hand-colored lithograph portrays the Ribbonfish (*Trachypterus bogmarus*), a deep-sea species notable for its elongated, ribbon-like body and distinctive crimson fins. The main figure stretches across the page, displaying its sleek silver-grey form with dramatic scarlet dorsal and caudal fin extensions. Smaller anatomical details—including a close view of the mouth and internal structures—are also included, reflecting the scientific intent of the expedition’s zoological plates. The Ribbonfish is one of the ocean’s most unusual creatures, rarely seen by humans in the 19th century. Its inclusion in *Voyage en Islande et au Groenland* (Paris, 1842) highlights the breadth of Paul Gaimard’s 1835 scientific mission, which, although initially intended to search for Jean de Blosseville’s lost Arctic expedition, became one of the most comprehensive natural history surveys of Iceland and Greenland. The plate was drawn by Louis Bévalet, an accomplished natural history artist, and lithographed by J. Bernard, with hand coloring applied to bring out the vivid red accents against the metallic body. The striking coloration and unique form make this one of the most visually dramatic fish plates in the series, both scientifically significant and highly decorative. Collectors value this plate for its rarity and its representation of one of the deep sea’s most enigmatic fishes. It is an essential piece for collections focused on ichthyology, Arctic exploration, or 19th-century natural history illustration. Condition report: Excellent impression with bright hand coloring. Wide margins with some scattered foxing and light age toning, not affecting the central image. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: Its bold silver and red contrast makes this plate especially eye-catching. A sleek black or mahogany frame with a wide ivory mat will highlight the colors beautifully. A double mat with a deep red inner border can further enhance the dramatic effect. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: Drawn by Louis Bévalet, lithographed by J. Bernard – from Paul Gaimard, Paris, 1842
