The Red-Breasted Merganser: Hand-Colored Engraving Published in c.1770

About the Item

The Red-Breasted Merganser: Hand-Colored Engraving from the Seligmann Edition after George Edwards’ Natural History This engraving depicts a Red-Breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator), part of George Edwards’ work, republished in Johann Michael Seligmann’s Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel (Collection of Various Foreign and Rare Birds). The illustration shows the bird perched on a rock surrounded by water, showcasing its distinctive long, serrated bill and striking plumage. The Red-Breasted Merganser has a greenish-black head with a shaggy crest, a white neck, and a red breast, as reflected in the vivid colors of the hand-coloring. Known for its speed and agility in water, the Red-Breasted Merganser is native to Europe, North America, and Asia, frequenting freshwater lakes and rivers. This species is distinguished by its ability to dive for fish, thanks to its serrated bill, which helps it grip slippery prey. Seligmann’s edition combines Edwards’ original artistry with added titles in Latin, German, and French: "Der größere rothbrüstige Taucher," "Le Plongeon à la poitrine rouge," and "Mergus major, pectore rubro." This work reflects the natural history tradition of the 18th century, blending scientific observation with artistic detail. This copperplate engraving, carefully hand-colored, preserves the intricate detail and vibrant hues that have lasted for over two centuries, representing the lasting impact of Edwards and Seligmann in the world of ornithology and natural history.
