About the Item
This image is an intricate frontispiece from a book by Jacques Barozzi de Vignole, known as Vignola, an influential 16th-century Italian architect who was one of the great architect theorists of the Renaissance. The title "Livre nouveau des cinq ordres d'architecture" translates to "New Book of the Five Orders of Architecture," which refers to the classical orders: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite.
The frontispiece is rich in allegorical imagery, displaying various figures and symbols that represent the art of architecture and the knowledge contained within the book. Such engravings served not only as decorative elements but also as symbolic representations of the content and importance of the work.
Engravings like this were typical in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, serving as ornate and didactic introductions to the subject matter of the book, often including references to the author's contributions to the field, and sometimes, as seen here, including verses addressing the reader.

View AllMasterpieces of Architecture and Ornamentation: Decorative Title Page from 1766
Located in Langweer, NL
This is the title page from "Recueil Des Plus Beaux Édifices Anciens et Modernes," a compilation celebrating the finest architectural designs and decorative works, published in 1761 and renewed in 1766. The engraving features an elaborate frame adorned with classical columns, cherubs, and cartouches. At the top, a medallion portrait is prominently displayed, flanked by richly detailed ornaments. Jacobs Vignellius, whose name appears on the medallion in the engraving, is not a widely recognized historical figure. His inclusion in the artwork might refer to an individual associated with architecture, design, or art history at the time. It is possible he was a patron, contributor, or editor connected to this collection of architectural and decorative works.
Below, a collection of artistic and architectural elements, including a globe, drapery, and tools, symbolizes the artistic endeavors of the period. The engraving is signed by Babel as the engraver and P. Audouin as the publisher.
