About the Item

Renaissance Ceiling Design – Geometric Panel Pattern in Rich Gold and Red, Plate LXV This 19th-century chromolithograph from *L’Ornement Polychrome* (Plate LXV) features a striking Renaissance ceiling design with repeating geometric motifs rendered in deep crimson, black, and antique gold. Lithographed by Dufour et Laval and printed by Firmin-Didot Frères in Paris, it exemplifies the refined ornamentation typical of High Renaissance interiors, especially in ecclesiastical or palatial architecture. The central composition is formed by an interlocking pattern of octagonal and pentagonal coffers, each filled with highly detailed vegetal scrolls, rosettes, and fleur-de-lis-like flourishes. The symmetry and precision of the design suggest its origin as a decorated wooden ceiling, possibly in a chapel, palace, or library. Every coffer is outlined with multiple borders—red, gold, and black—that give the illusion of depth, evoking the richly carved and painted ceilings of the Italian and French Renaissance. The alternating central medallions—some with stylized flowers, others with gilded scrollwork—enhance the sense of rhythm and opulence. This plate is ideal for those interested in Renaissance decorative arts, architectural ornament, or historical interior design. It offers a window into the elaborate craftsmanship and geometric harmony prized during the 16th century. Condition: Very good. Bright colors with slight age toning to the outer margins. No significant blemishes or damage to the image area. Framing tips: Best framed in a dark walnut or mahogany frame to complement the deep reds and golds. A narrow gold fillet or a cream-colored mat with a warm undertone would enhance the architectural elegance of the piece. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Dufour et Laval (lith.), Firmin-Didot Frères, Paris, c.1869
