Renaissance Scrollwork & Grotesques – Decorative Borders with Mythical Beasts, Pl. LII This ornate chromolithograph from Plate LII of Albert Racinet’s L’Ornement Polychrome (Paris, c.1869) presents a stunning array of Renaissance scrollwork and grotesque ornamentation. Carefully executed and vividly colored, the plate highlights the rich stylistic vocabulary of the Renaissance period, particularly the symmetrical vertical borders and band motifs used in architectural friezes, furniture, and manuscript illumination. Each vertical panel is a masterpiece of intricate scrolls, flowers, fruits, masks, and fantastical beasts. Cherubs, griffins, sphinxes, winged lions, and mythological hybrid creatures are seamlessly integrated into the swirling foliage, illustrating the influence of Roman antiquity as rediscovered during the Renaissance. Jewel-like details—pearls, cabochons, and medallions—enhance the luxurious feel, making the designs well-suited to frescoed interiors and grand decorative panels. Particularly notable are the central bands featuring winged caducei and angelic figures, symbols of wisdom and divine protection, flanked by botanical arabesques that mirror the balance and order prized in Renaissance design. The bottom section contains smaller circular motifs: medallion heads, masks, and floral rosettes, each a perfect distillation of the classical revival spirit.
