About the Item

The Rich Glutton and Lazarus Engraving – Luke XVI Biblical Scene 1735 This antique engraving depicts the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 16, published in 1735. In the foreground lies Lazarus, the destitute beggar, naked and emaciated, his body marked with sores that are being licked by three dogs. He is shown with a sorrowful expression, raising his hand in silent plea, while his thin limbs and collapsed posture emphasise his suffering and poverty. His walking stick and begging bowl lie abandoned beside him, further highlighting his helplessness. Behind Lazarus rises an imposing architectural setting. At the top of a grand stairway sits the richly dressed glutton enjoying a lavish feast. He is surrounded by guests, servants, musicians, and entertainers in an ornate palace garden adorned with tall cypress trees, balustrades, statues, and fountains. The scene illustrates the stark contrast between the rich man’s worldly indulgence and Lazarus’s misery at his gate, ignored by all who pass him. This engraving was created in 1735 as part of a published Bible, using the copper engraving technique, which allowed for the intricate detailing seen in the figures, classical architecture, and background landscaping. Each line was engraved into a copper plate and printed on laid paper, typical of high-quality Bible illustrations of this period. The print is significant for its dramatic visual interpretation of a key moral teaching in Christian theology. It serves as a striking reminder of themes of charity, humility, and the eternal consequences of earthly choices. Its grand composition and powerful symbolism make it a valuable piece for collectors of religious prints, students of biblical art, or anyone interested in 18th-century engraving craftsmanship. Condition summary: Overall good condition for its age. Light even toning across the sheet. Minor foxing spots, mainly in the margins. No visible tears or repairs. Strong impression with rich dark lines and excellent detail retention. Paper remains strong and stable. Framing tips: This evocative engraving will display beautifully in a classic dark wood, black, or mahogany frame to echo its strong lines, combined with an off-white or warm cream mount to complement the aged paper tone. For an elegant traditional look, a gold-beaded inner frame can be added. Use UV-protective glass to preserve the engraving’s fine details and prevent further fading or toning from light exposure.
