About the Item

Rock Dove or Common Pigeon – Antique Hand-Coloured Engraving with Dutch Text, 1770-1829 This finely hand-coloured engraving depicts the Rock Dove (Columba livia), also known as the common pigeon, standing alert beside its nest containing two white eggs. The bird is shown in a naturalistic pose, highlighting its iridescent green and purple neck feathers, soft grey plumage, and distinctive black wing bars. The engraving captures the elegant stance of the pigeon, with careful attention to feather texture and shading, typical of the high-quality ornithological works of the late 18th and early 19th century. This print originates from the monumental Dutch ornithological series "Nederlandsche Vogelen," published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829 by Cornelius Nozeman, Martinus Houttuyn, and Jan Christiaan Sepp. It remains the first and most important comprehensive study of the birds of the Netherlands, remarkable for its life-sized depictions and detailed accompanying descriptions. The work is celebrated for its accuracy, vibrant hand-colouring, and the scientific precision with which each species is rendered. Accompanying this plate are two original pages of Dutch text from the same publication, offering a period description of the Rock Dove’s physical characteristics, behaviour, and habitat. The text references both its wild and domesticated forms, noting its distribution across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, as well as its adaptation to urban environments. It also provides historical ornithological context, mentioning earlier authorities and classification debates surrounding the species. This print and text set offers not only an exquisite decorative piece but also an authentic piece of natural history, ideal for collectors of antique bird engravings, early ornithology, or Dutch scientific publications. Its combination of visual artistry and scholarly background makes it a particularly desirable acquisition. Condition: Good with age-related toning and minimal handling marks. Plate mark clearly visible. Strong impression with vibrant original color. Green stripe on bottom edge right corner in margin, Dutch text page has one small hole in margin and some brown spots. Framing tips: Best displayed in a dark walnut or black wooden frame with a cream or light grey archival mat to accentuate the hand-colouring while preserving its historic charm.
