About the Item

Rudd and Minnow - Elegant Freshwater Fish from Scandinavia This captivating 19th-century lithograph from *Skandinaviens Fiskar* features three beautiful freshwater fish native to Scandinavian waters: the Common Rudd (Leuciscus rutilus), the Red-Eyed Roach (Leuciscus erythrophthalmus), and the European Minnow (Phoxinus aphya). Masterfully illustrated by Wilhelm von Wright and published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this print showcases the delicate balance between scientific precision and artistic expression. The top of the plate features the Common Rudd (Leuciscus rutilus), instantly recognizable by its streamlined body and bright, reflective scales. The nuanced coloration transitions from silvery hues to subtle golden tones, highlighted by vivid red fins. Rudd are commonly found in calm, weedy waters, and their distinctive reddish eyes and fins make them a favorite among anglers and naturalists alike. Below the Rudd, the Red-Eyed Roach (Leuciscus erythrophthalmus) is depicted with a more rounded body shape and a similar shimmering scale pattern. The artist's meticulous attention to the vivid red-orange eyes gives this species its characteristic and eye-catching appearance. Known for inhabiting slow-moving rivers and lakes, the Red-Eyed Roach is highly adaptable and commonly found throughout Europe. At the bottom, two European Minnows (Phoxinus aphya) are illustrated with their slim, elongated bodies and speckled coloration. The male, distinguished by its more vibrant and iridescent scales, is presented alongside the paler female. These small, agile fish are known for forming large shoals and are a vital part of the freshwater ecosystem, serving as prey for larger predatory species. The lithographic technique used in this print combines fine line engraving with vibrant hand coloring, giving the fish a lifelike presence that highlights their natural elegance and diversity. The harmonious blending of colors and the meticulous attention to detail reflect the artistic mastery of Wilhelm von Wright. Condition: This print is remarkably well preserved, with vivid colors and crisp lines that remain intact after more than a century. Framing advice: To enhance its decorative and scientific appeal, consider framing it in a simple dark wooden frame with a neutral mat, allowing the natural hues of the fish to stand out. This piece would make an outstanding addition to any natural history collection or a stylish accent in a home inspired by nature and aquatic life.
