About the Item
Set of 3 Biblical Engravings – Adoration, St. Matthew & Healing the Blind (1735)
This elegant set of three antique engravings, published in 1735, illustrates key episodes from the Gospel of Matthew using finely executed copper engraving. The scenes include the Adoration of the Magi, a portrait of St. Matthew the Evangelist, and the healing of two blind men—each rendered with classical architecture, expressive figures, and rich symbolic detail. These works reflect 18th-century devotional art at its finest and are ideal for collectors or as a unified display.
The first engraving, from Matthew Chapter II, is titled "The Wise Men’s Offering." It depicts the Adoration of the Magi, with Mary seated holding the infant Jesus while three kings present their gifts. One kneels in veneration, another approaches with a vessel, and the third stands in awe, guided by the radiant star shining from the upper right. The setting includes a Romanesque stable with a high arch and view of the distant hills, emphasising the humble origins and divine revelation of Christ.
The second engraving, from Matthew Chapter IX.9, shows "St. Matthew the Evangelist" standing upon a pedestal, barefoot, holding a book and quill. A radiant halo shines above his head. Behind him, a small classical rotunda and distant landscape provide depth. A tax collector before becoming an apostle, Matthew is traditionally identified with the winged man or angel, and here he appears as a scribe and inspired writer. The image honours his role in recording the life and teachings of Christ.
The third engraving, also from Chapter IX, is titled "Two Blind Men Restor’d to Sight." Christ is shown touching the eyes of one kneeling man while gently guiding the second toward him. Both are illuminated by his haloed presence, with a crowd gathered in the background, symbolising the growing awareness of Christ’s miracles. The setting includes a tree-lined hillside and classical buildings, blending nature and sacred architecture to frame this moving act of healing.
Condition summary: All three prints are in good condition with mild toning and light foxing, mainly confined to the margins. No tears or repairs. Strong, clean impressions with excellent detail. Paper is firm and evenly preserved.
Framing tips: These works make an ideal triptych in uniform black, walnut, or dark gold frames. Use a warm ivory or cream mat to complement the aged paper tone. UV-protective glass is recommended to ensure the preservation of fine engraved lines.
