Set of 4 Armorial Engravings by Charles Catton (1728-1798), England

About the Item

These hand colored engravings are old English crests/coats of arms -- two in each frame: Ashburnham & Effingham; Portland & Manchester; Northington & Radnor; and Peterboro & Hamford.. Based on well-researched information mounted on the back of each, they were drawn circa 1790 by Charles Catton (1728-1798), sometimes referred to as Charles Catton the Elder, and engraved by F. Chesham. Catton was a notable English painter and one of the founding members of the Royal Academy. He was also appointed the King's coach painter and in 1784 he was master of the Worshipful Company of Painters-Stainers. These engravings on copper plate were professionally hand-colored in England. The paper is thick, soft white, high quality chain-lined paper. Museum matting and framing done in the last 20 years.
