Exceptional Regency Hexagonal Brass and Glass Lantern, England, Circa: 1795

About the Item

This exquisite lantern was originally a candle-burning fixture. It is a true original -- some 225 years old and still beautiful! The delicate hexagonal form has been imitated, copied, or adapted by many makers over the years, but never quite as perfect as this period original. The circular section in the bottom is glass-filled (originally that's where the candle stick sat) while open outside the circle (originally to promote air flow). Accentuating the simple geometrical form are finials at the base and anthemians at the top corners. The lantern is suspended by 6 gracefully-curved supports ending in scrolls at the top. The electrical assembly, added probably about 100 years ago, matches the rest in finish. Recently cleaned, restored, rewired (to US standards) and polished to its original glorious look.
