About the Item

Set of Four German Renaissance Prints by H. Dolmetsch, Ornamentenschatz, c. 1880 This exquisite set of four original chromolithographic prints by H. Dolmetsch comes from the renowned late 19th-century ornamental reference work *Ornamentenschatz*, published by Julius Hoffmann in Stuttgart. These plates are dedicated to the elaborate and richly varied design traditions of the German Renaissance, offering a remarkable visual survey of decorative arts across disciplines such as stained glass, embroidery, bookbinding, and typographic ornament. Each plate is a masterclass in historic ornamentation. The first features an intricate stained glass design with stylized floral scrollwork, crowned by a cherubic winged face, reflecting the religious and artistic sensibilities of the period. The second showcases Renaissance bookbinding motifs, densely packed with borders, emblems, and architectural forms inspired by 16th-century leatherwork and gold tooling. The third bursts with color and pattern from embroidered textiles, filled with fauna, flora, and heraldic motifs—a testament to the opulence of courtly attire and interior decor. The final plate is devoted to typographic ornament, including initials, scrolls, borders, and grotesques that were used in fine German book printing and manuscript illumination. Hermann Dolmetsch (1838–1908) was a respected German designer and professor known for his commitment to documenting historical ornament. His *Ornamentenschatz* was one of the most comprehensive 19th-century publications on decorative arts, intended both as a design sourcebook for architects and craftsmen and as a visual celebration of historic artistic styles. These prints were produced through the high-quality chromolithography techniques of the time, allowing for vivid, durable coloration and fine detail reproduction. Their stylistic precision and aesthetic richness reflect the values of the historicist revival movements in 19th-century Europe, when designers sought inspiration in the great traditions of the past. Condition Summary: The prints are in good antique condition, showing minimal signs of age such as faint foxing or mild edge wear. The colors remain vibrant, and the paper is strong with no major tears or losses. These are excellent collector-grade examples. Framing Tips: To highlight the intricate detail and vivid coloration, these prints are best framed individually with a generous white mat border. Consider using museum-quality, acid-free mats and UV-protective glass. For a cohesive display, select antique gold or dark wood frames to complement the Renaissance aesthetic. Hung as a set, they make a dramatic and scholarly wall presentation suitable for libraries, design studios, or classic interiors.

Set of Four Antique French Religious Carbon Prints by Maison AD. Braun & Cie
Located in COLMAR, FR
These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969. This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s. The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels". The female saint holding a book is from the artwork "Annunciation" by the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi...
