Set of six framed Japanese Genji story woodblock prints, early 20th century

About the Item

A set of six Japanese Genji story uchida woodblock prints, Kyoto early 20th century. Framed - probably late 20th century - in gold-tinted metal, matted in chocolate, ivory, and wheat, and behind glass. Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi 内田美術書肆, an art specialty store founded in 1919 by Uchida Motouchi 内田基一, published art books and woodblock prints. The store closed in 1944, but reopened after the war under the new name Uchida Art (Uchida A–to 内田アート), and closed again, permanently, in the following years. The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari 源氏物語), written by the court lady Murasaki Shikibu 紫式部 (d. first quarter of the 11th c.), is believed to be the world’s first novel. These exquisite prints illustrate segments from the story beautifully; the literary segment is annotated on each piece’s verso. Each work: 10.25” W x 9” D x .75” H 5” H as a set
