About the Item

Set of Three 19th Century Moorish Architectural Prints by H. Dolmetsch This remarkable set of three 19th-century prints captures the refined complexity of Moorish and Arab-Moorish ornamentation, drawn from the celebrated *Ornamentenschatz* series by H. Dolmetsch and published by Verlag von Jul. Hoffmann in Stuttgart. These prints are part of a vast visual compendium of historical design, intended to document and inspire the decorative arts during the late 19th century. This specific trio focuses on architectural elements and ornamental tile patterns derived from Islamic architecture in North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. The first plate, titled *Arabisch-Maurisch: Architektonische Verzierungen*, showcases detailed architectural carvings, columns, arches, and geometric reliefs typically found in the Alhambra in Granada or other Andalusian Islamic structures. Intricate arabesques, muqarnas forms, and kufic calligraphy are rendered in exquisite line work that highlights the mathematical and spiritual elegance of Islamic design. The second plate, *Arabisch-Maurisch: Mosaikarbeiten und Glasirte Thonarbeiten*, illustrates brightly colored mosaic and tile motifs with interlocking star patterns, vegetal scrolls, and latticework. The chromatic palette evokes the polychrome splendor of glazed ceramics and zellige tilework found in Moroccan palaces and mosques. The symmetry and rhythmic complexity reflect the Moorish mastery of geometry and abstraction as vehicles for aesthetic transcendence. The third plate, titled simply *Maurisch*, continues with painted architectural ornamentation in full color. Rich reds, blues, and golds bring life to arabesque wall panels, niche decorations, and stylized columns. Decorative door frames and surface patterns illustrate the ornamental continuity between structural form and surface embellishment in Moorish buildings. The designs are not only visually striking but also rich with historical and cultural symbolism. H. Dolmetsch, the German designer and historian behind this work, was a pivotal figure in the documentation of global decorative traditions. His work contributed significantly to the 19th-century revival movements and to the wider understanding of non-European design systems in a time of growing global curiosity. His prints are characterized by both scholarly accuracy and artistic sensitivity. Condition Summary: The prints are in good antique condition. The paper shows some expected age toning and occasional minor foxing, but the lines and colors remain sharp and vivid. No tears or losses affect the artwork itself. They have been well preserved and stored flat. Framing Tips: For optimal display, these prints benefit from archival matting in a light, neutral tone to highlight the detailed linework and/or vibrant colors. A simple wooden or black frame can help direct focus to the intricate ornamentation. Due to their historical and decorative significance, they are ideal for use in interior design projects or as part of a curated wall collection that bridges art, architecture, and history.
