Siege of Szigetvár, 1566: Lafreri's Rare Handcolored Engraving Published in 1585

About the Item

"Ordine con il quale l'esercito Turchesco suole presentarsi in campagna, contro de Christiani ò Persiani" Translating to: "Order with which the Turkish army usually presents itself in the campaign against the Christians or Persians" Colored copperplate engraving by A. Brambilla for C. Duchetti, Rome, 1585. With engraved scrollwork cartouche at top left. This rare historical sheet vividly captures the intense 1566 conquest of Szigetvár by the Turkish army, based on the original engraving by Lafreri from the same year. The depiction is a dynamic and detailed representation of siege warfare during the 16th century, showcasing the might and organization of the Ottoman forces. Infantrymen, artillery units, and the extensive baggage train are meticulously arranged around the fortress, with the figure of the sultan positioned centrally, underscoring his command over the operation. The graphic also features the Turkish army's tactical formations as they capture the fortress, a critical point of defense during the Ottoman-Habsburg wars. The use of color enhances the illustration, highlighting different regiments and activities within the siege, from the deployment of soldiers to the positioning of the artillery. Additionally, this piece is marked by a watermark of a letter 'M' beneath a star in a shield, which corresponds to Woodward's watermark classification 313 ff. This watermark adds to the sheet's authenticity and historical value. Collectors and historians alike will appreciate this engraving for its artistic merit as well as its significance in illustrating a pivotal moment in European military history. Shows the formation of the Turkish troops during the Battle of Szigetvár in 1566, in the center of which the Sultan rides, attacking a fortress; surrounded by tents and huts, with mountains and gallows in the background. Re-engraving based on Lafreri's template.
