About the Item

Title: St. Paul the Apostle Engraving – Acts IX Vision & Conversion c.1735 Description: This impressive antique engraving titled “St. Paul the Apostle” illustrates the powerful moment from Acts Chapter IX, Verse 4, when Saul (later Paul) is struck by a divine vision on the road to Damascus. Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving depicts Paul standing resolutely on a pedestal, symbolising his apostolic authority and transformation from persecutor to evangelist. Paul is portrayed as a dignified figure with a long beard and flowing robes, holding a sword in his left hand, representing the “sword of the Spirit” and his martyrdom by beheading, while his right hand clasps a scroll, signifying his epistles and teachings. A radiant halo surrounds his head, with divine light shining upon him from above, marking his anointing as an apostle. In the background, a small vignette shows the moment of his conversion, where Paul fell to the ground upon hearing Christ’s voice asking, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” The engraving is executed using the copper engraving technique, known for its precise line work, fine hatching, and tonal depth. Such prints were typically engraved after designs by prominent Bible illustrators like Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, though this plate remains unsigned. These plates were integral to family Bibles, serving as visual sermons to reinforce scriptural teachings. Collectors value such engravings for their theological, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into 18th-century Protestant devotion and the importance of visual theology in household religious education. Condition summary: Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. The paper remains stable with a strong plate impression and engraved details clearly preserved. No major tears or losses are visible. Framing tips: Frame this engraving in a dark wood or black moulding with gold inner edging for a classic ecclesiastical presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to complement the aged paper tone. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve the fine engraving lines and prevent further ageing. This engraving will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of biblical prints, adding gravitas and spiritual depth to any collection.
