Title: St. Philip Apostle Engraving – John I Calling of Philip c.1735
Description:
This detailed antique engraving titled “St. Philip the Apostle” depicts Philip, one of the Twelve Apostles, referencing John Chapter I, Verse 43, where Jesus calls Philip to follow him. Created circa 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving shows Philip standing with dignified authority on a stone pedestal, symbolising his apostolic role and missionary legacy.
Philip is portrayed with a radiant halo, wearing flowing robes, holding a long staff surmounted with a cross, representing his preaching and martyrdom. His right hand is raised in a gesture of teaching or blessing, while his left holds a book, symbolising the Gospel. In the background, a scene of his martyrdom is depicted, with Philip being crucified upside down, surrounded by soldiers and onlookers, underscoring his steadfast faith and sacrifice.
The engraving is executed using the copper engraving technique, renowned for its precise linear detailing, cross-hatching, and tonal shading that bring depth and texture to both figure and landscape. Though unsigned, it aligns stylistically with engravings after designs by Gerard Hoet or Bernard Picart, widely used in English folio Bibles of the early 18th century as theological illustrations and visual teaching tools.
Collectors value such engravings for their religious, historical, and artistic significance, offering insights into early Protestant devotional life, biblical illustration traditions, and the visual culture of apostolic commemoration.
Condition summary:
Good condition with light age toning and minor foxing, mainly in the margins. The plate impression remains strong with engraved details crisp and well preserved. Slight edge wear consistent with age, with no major tears or losses.
Framing tips:
Frame this engraving with a dark wood or black moulding featuring a gold inner edge for a classic ecclesiastical presentation. Use a warm ivory or cream mount board to harmonise with the aged paper tones. UV-protective non-reflective glass is recommended to preserve its fine line work and prevent further paper ageing. This engraving will display beautifully in a study, library, or gallery wall of apostolic prints, enriching any collection with its spiritual narrative and historical depth.
