About the Item

Kavavaow Mannomee was born in 1958 to Inuit parents who were artists, as are his two brothers. Besides being a successful artist himself, he is also a printmaker in the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative's Kinngait lithography and stonecut studios. The Co-operative is located in the town of Cape Dorset, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. Kavavaow Mannomee is part of the newer generation of Inuit artists who have experimented with non-traditional subjects. Here he pairs a stiletto with one of the Little People of Inuit legend. The juxtaposition of two icons from very different cultures reveals insight and a sense of humor. This charming and now scarce print is limited to 50 copies (it is #24 of 50) and four artist's proofs, which are in the Co-operative's archives, Each print is unique. It is singed in syllabics by the artist who was also the print-maker, and it has the red igloo logo of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative of Cape Dorset to attest its authenticity. Along the bottom of the print, in English, the Co-operative staff has written in pencil the title, the medium, the edition number, and the artist's name. It is now framed in acid-free mounting and non-reflective, UV blocking museum quality glass in a fine black wooden frame. The print's dimensions are 15" W x 22.5" H. The framed size is listed below. Kavavaow Mannomee's art has been included in the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative Annual Print Collection for many years starting in 1988, and since 1990 he has participated in various group and solo shows throughout France, Belgium, Canada, and the United States. Examples of his art are in the permanent collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg, VA.
