About the Item

Swordfish and John Dory - Striking Scandinavian Fish Lithograph This captivating 19th-century lithograph from *Skandinaviens Fiskar* showcases two remarkable Scandinavian fish species: the Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and the John Dory (Zeus faber). This extraordinary print reflects the artistic talent of C. Erdmann, whose meticulous hand coloring and lithographic precision bring these fascinating fish to life. Published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this lithograph is a remarkable piece of natural history art that seamlessly combines scientific accuracy with visual elegance. At the top of the plate, the Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is depicted with its characteristic elongated bill and sleek, powerful body. The smooth, streamlined shape of the fish emphasizes its strength and speed, crucial for catching prey in the open ocean. The subtle shading and fine gradation of gray tones give the fish a dynamic and lifelike presence, perfectly capturing its majestic nature. Known for its iconic shape and impressive size, the Swordfish is one of the most recognizable and admired fish in Scandinavian waters. Below the Swordfish is the John Dory (Zeus faber), a truly distinctive fish with a laterally compressed, disk-shaped body and large, prominent eyes. Its most striking feature is the dark spot on each side, surrounded by a halo of lighter scales, which serves as a deceptive eye to confuse predators. The long, spiny dorsal fins arch dramatically, giving the fish a regal and exotic appearance. The combination of metallic gray and golden hues, rendered with exceptional precision, enhances the unique texture of its scales and the dramatic contrast between its spiny fins and round body. The lithographic technique used in this print highlights both the graceful elegance of the Swordfish and the peculiar beauty of the John Dory. Combining accurate anatomical representation with artistic flair, this lithograph is a perfect example of 19th-century natural history illustration. The skilled hand coloring adds depth and dimension, creating a lifelike impression that captivates the viewer. Condition: This print is in very good to excellent condition, with vibrant colors and crisp details that have remained remarkably well-preserved over the years. Framing Tips: To enhance the visual impact, consider framing it with a classic frame and a neutral mat, drawing attention to the striking contrast between the graceful Swordfish and the curious John Dory. This lithograph is a perfect addition to any marine-themed collection or natural history display, celebrating the diversity and elegance of Scandinavian aquatic life.

Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865
Located in Langweer, NL
Zoology Print of Swordfish, Tuna, Anglerfish and Exotic Fishes by T Bromme c1865 This highly detailed hand-colored lithograph was published circa 1865 by German geographer and scientific illustrator Traugott Bromme. It is part of his ambitious natural history series *Illustrirter Hand-Atlas der Erde und der Menschheit*, combining zoological knowledge with elegant visual presentation for 19th-century educational use. This particular plate highlights a variety of marine and deep-sea fish, focusing on distinct anatomical adaptations. Dominating the top of the composition is a powerful swordfish (14) with its extended bill, flanked by a streamlined tuna (15), herring (13), and mackerel-like species (12). Below them is an extraordinary anglerfish (4), shown with its characteristic lure and wide, flattened head—typical of deep-sea species. Also included are armored or scaleless fish like the fangtooth (3), dragonfish (1), and several unusual tropical or reef species with prominent spines or patterning. A garfish or needlefish (20) stretches across the bottom, opposite a striped wrasse or perch (5). Other species include the European sea bass (7), gobies and blennies (8, 9, 10), a butterflyfish (16), and a few primitive or armored species with bony plates (19). The composition reflects Bromme’s emphasis on both scientific accuracy and visual curiosity, with each fish labeled and arranged to showcase size, structure, and behavior. These images were essential in a pre-photographic age for understanding marine biodiversity and taxonomy. This is a compelling example of antique scientific illustration...
