About the Item

Three Antique Engravings – Gospel Scenes and Apostles from St. Mark’s Account (1735) This striking trio of copperplate engravings, published circa 1735, features key episodes and figures from the Gospel of St. Mark. Rich in theological symbolism and classical detail, each print illustrates a dramatic moment in the life of Christ or an apostolic portrait. Executed with refined linework and a strong narrative focus, they offer powerful visual reflections on New Testament themes, ideal for collectors of sacred art or antique biblical illustration. The left engraving, from Mark Chapter XII verse 15, is titled *“Christ’s Decision about Tribute to Caesar.”* This scene portrays Christ amid a gathering of Pharisees and Herodians, responding to their attempt to trap him with the question of paying taxes to Caesar. Christ’s reply—“Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”—is implied in his poised yet commanding gesture. The architecture in the background features classical arches and colonnades, reinforcing the Roman imperial context. The scene is signed by J. Drapentier. The center image, from Mark Chapter V, is captioned *“The legion of devils cast out.”* This dramatic episode, often known as the healing of the Gerasene demoniac, shows Christ delivering a possessed man from a legion of demons. The devils are cast into a nearby herd of swine, which is seen in the background rushing headlong into the water. The healed man sits at Jesus’ feet in a moment of restored peace. The composition vividly conveys both supernatural power and divine mercy. The right print is a devotional portrait of *“St. James the Less the Apostle,”* based on Mark Chapter XV verse 40. Depicted standing on a pedestal, the apostle is shown with a staff or club, an allusion to his martyrdom. His gaze is contemplative, and a halo encircles his head. In the background, pastoral figures and distant buildings enrich the setting. The engraving honors James’ role as one of the lesser-known but steadfast disciples. Condition summary: Good overall condition with strong impressions. Light toning and faint foxing, mainly to margins. Minor handling wear to the lower corner of the first plate. No restoration or repairs observed. Framing tips: These engravings work beautifully as a grouped triptych in uniform dark wood or ebony frames. Use archival off-white matting to complement the paper tone and enhance contrast. Technique: Engraving Maker: J. Drapentier and unknown artists, European, circa 1735
