About the Item

Tomb of William of Orange in Delft – After Houckgeest, Dutch Print 1926 Description: Magnificent early 20th-century chromolithograph depicting the monumental tomb of William of Orange (Willem van Oranje) in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft, after a painting by the celebrated 17th-century Dutch master Gerard Houckgeest. This finely printed image was issued as a holiday art supplement to the *Haagsche Post* Christmas edition, dated 25 December 1926 (No. 682). The image captures the grandeur and solemnity of the interior of the Nieuwe Kerk, one of the most historically important churches in the Netherlands. Dominating the center is the elaborate marble and bronze monument of William the Silent, father of the Dutch nation, who was assassinated in 1584. The mausoleum, completed in the early 17th century, is surrounded by Corinthian columns and allegorical sculptures. Also visible are coats of arms and memorial flags hanging from the vaulted gothic interior, adding to the atmosphere of reverence and national pride. In the foreground, a small group of visitors, including a woman in traditional Dutch costume, observe the tomb quietly, giving the scene a sense of both historical continuity and lived cultural memory. A dog sits patiently near the railings, and the checkered marble floor draws the viewer into the space. The perspective and architectural rendering are based on the techniques perfected by Houckgeest, known for his church interiors and mastery of light and spatial depth. This high-quality color reproduction was printed by L. van Leer & Co., Amsterdam, a firm known for its excellence in chromolithographic printing. The artwork is signed in the plate by W\.H. Pau, indicating the adaptation or drawing after Houckgeest's original. This piece offers both historical significance and visual splendor, making it ideal for collectors of Dutch history, architectural illustration, or regal memorial art. Condition report: Very good condition. Minor edge wear and faint toning near the borders. Colors are rich and well preserved. No creases, tears, or losses. Framing tips: A deep walnut or black wood frame with a cream or off-white mat would accentuate the architectural depth and warm tones of the print. Consider a double mat with a narrow inner accent line to echo the frame. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: After Gerard Houckgeest; printed by L. van Leer & Co., Amsterdam Publisher: *Haagsche Post*, Christmas Supplement, 25 December 1926
