Traditional Attire of Valday: Vestiges of Russian Heritage, Published in 1814

About the Item

The images are hand-colored engravings from an early 19th-century publication that offers a visual representation of the traditional dress and customs of the Russian people. They are from "Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Russians." The first image depicts an unmarried female from Waldai (now Valday) She is dressed in a traditional costume that includes a red sarafan, which is a long, sleeveless dress, commonly worn over a white blouse with puffed sleeves. Around her waist is a green belt with long ribbons hanging down the front. She wears a yellow headdress, likely signifying her unmarried status, and she carries a basket, indicating perhaps a role in gathering or domestic work. The second image shows a married female from Waldai, distinguishable by her attire and perhaps by specific elements like her headdress, which would align with the marital customs of the region. Her dress consists of a blue underdress with a decorative, patterned shawl wrapped around her shoulders, which features yellow as the dominant color with red and green accents. On her head, she wears a tall, cylindrical hat, which is often a part of traditional Russian bridal wear, adorned with what seems to be a red top, indicating her married status. Both images are carefully detailed, with attention to the fabric patterns, jewelry, and the nuanced differences in their attire that reflect their marital status, as was typical in many traditional societies. The presence of such details helps to provide a deeper understanding of the cultural and social norms of the time. The Waldai, also known as Valday, is a town located in the Valdaysky District of Novgorod Oblast in Russia. It is situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Valdayskoye, which is among the largest in the Valdai Hills, a region in northwestern central Russia known for its rolling hills and numerous lakes. The Valdai Hills themselves are situated roughly midway between Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and span several oblasts including Leningrad, Novgorod, Tver, Pskov, and Smolensk. Valday is historically significant and was first mentioned in a chronicle in 1495. The town developed as a major trade center due to its location on the road connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg. Valday also became renowned for its bell manufacturing and is a notable pilgrimage destination. The area is known for its picturesque landscapes and is a popular tourist spot, especially in summer, when people come to visit the lake and the town, which features many recreation facilities and sanatoria. Valdaysky National Park, which was established to protect the landscapes of the highest part of the Valdai Hills, includes Lake Valdayskoye and the northern section of Lake Seliger, as well as the town of Valday. Since 2004, the National Park has been recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is important to note that the term "Waldai tribes" might be a bit misleading, as Valday is a town rather than a home to a specific tribal group. The reference could be historical, referring to the people who lived in the Valdai Hills area in the past. The local culture, as represented in the traditional dress of the women depicted in the engravings mentioned, is reflective of the Russian folk traditions prevalent in the region during the 19th century and earlier.
